Birthday Surprise

We shared on Instagram and Facebook just shy of two weeks ago, so this isn't likely to come as a shock to many, but I'm oh-so-pleased to announce that Devon and I are expecting a little micro human creature - more sweetly known as a babeh - in early May 2014.

We always grab an extra fortune cookie for our dog, and this was what his read just a few days after we found out.
I got the "not quite a surprise, but still a bit shocking nonetheless" news on my 25th birthday - August 24. I kept the news to myself all day and until late that evening - through sweet birthday surprises and outings with Devon, a Red Iguana dinner with my folks, and a movie with friends [we saw You're Next and there were times when I was damn sure it was going to scare the kid right out of me. Thankfully I'm just paranoid and that wasn't the case, and our little dude or dudette is growing stronger every day ♥ ]

Today I'm 15 weeks and 3 days along and every day gets a little bit better. My 1st trimester wasn't nearly as trying as some I've heard about, but people aren't joking when they say the 2nd blows that one out of the water.

I plan on doing a more detailed post, but for now here are a few highlights:

-I just began feeling flutters this past week. I felt my first right at a week ago, but I wasn't so sure about it, but they've been getting consistently more frequent and noticeable - even if it's still super slight, ever since. No joke - the kid's actually fluttering around right this moment.

-We don't know what kind of junk our baby has yet, but we do plan on finding out fairly soon.

-Devon surprised me with a Snoogle - one of those ridiculous-looking $60 body pillows. That thing is a dream! I honestly love it so much that I joke about trying to have sex with it. You can spoon it, it can spoon you, you can curl it up and around you while watching TV to let it flop onto a glass of water and wreck your laptop.......... [kidding/not kidding.] But seriously, I love it.

-Devon has been super sweet through all this. The first day or so was a daze of shock - think that famous Dave Goes to the Dentist video "Is this real life??" "Is this forrrrrreverrrr?!?" When I reached the last day of my first trimester he brought home flowers, he's been so patient, understanding, and supportive - not to mention he's run out at the drop of a hat [or tear] to pick up pho or pizza or whatever I had to have that moment only to pick at for a few moments and eschew.

-Due to an awkward and majorly inefficient work schedule, my crippling exhaustion those first few weeks, and the 325 hours of internship or volunteer work I need to get cracking on before this thing hatches, I left my job of 4 years just over a week ago. I wouldn't say it was an easy decision, and the family I worked for was so wonderful, but it has been really nice being able to veer my focus and energy fully into school, volunteer opportunities, and my home life.

-Owen has been a super snuggly, extra-lovable guy ever since we got knocked up. He's always been the sweetest little peach, but that dog... man, it's a wonderful I even have a pulse because dude just kills me dead every time I look at him.

-We found a midwife that we just love! She's so wonderful and I feel completely confident in her capabilities as a health care provider, pregnancy and labor support, and our decision to birth with her

-Speaking of our quickly-escalating crunch-factor - I've started accruing a little handful of cloth diapers and get so tickled whenever I see our stash grow and I got a hot deal on a Moby wrap that should be arriving any day now. You'd better believe I'll be strapping some stuffed animals to the dog with it at my first opportunity.

Trying to upload more photos and edit their captions on this iPad - see ruined laptop Snoogle comment above - is making me ultra ragey, but at least one of them worked! Off to track down some halfway decent food in Happy Valley!

  2. Awww I loved this post. I laughed out loud at your comment about having sex with your Snoogle. I must say, I was so happy with my decision to go with a midwife over an OB (though I had to do some intense convincing of my mom that my midwife was a medical professional and not a witch doctor...ugh). Glad you're feeling better every day!

    1. Thanks, Jenny! It's almost always surprising to me seeing people's responses and sometimes very strong opinions about our choice in healthcare practitioner or where/how we plan to birth.

    1. Thanks, Deanna! You're the first! I've had half a dozen people tell me they think I'm having a girl or have dreamt I was having a little lady. We really have no preference [sometimes it swings 51/49 one way or the other] but it'll be really fun to find out

    1. Thanks, Amy! I'm dying to share when our "junk appt" is, but my sweet mom stalks so many of my social media outlets and it's going to be hard enough keeping it from my folks for a bit as is! ;)
